The valley of the Rak river

The Rakov Škocjan Nature Reserve is probably the most famous karst area in Slovenia, showing most of the typical karst features. Most of the park is a limestone plateau with trees and without water. In this plateau, several deep valleys with a river at the bottom can be found. They are called Polje in Slovenian, a word adopted by the geologists for this kind of karst feature.

Slovenia is the type locale for Poljes. Polje means field, and we see why it is so: the plateau is dry, and only forest grows on this extreme conditions. The floor of the valleys is a fertile plain composed of river sediments, used for fields and meadows. The river is the Rak, after which the area is named.

The main sights of the park are Veliki naravni most (Big Natural Bridge) and Mali naravni most (Small Natural Bridge). Veliki naravni most is located at the western end of the valley. The road through the park, a single lane gravel road, crosses the bridge, but from the road this is almost invincible. The rather small opening is covered by a massive layer of limestone, and the bridge makes a rather massive impression.

Once through the bridge, the river Rak crosses another very small polje, and then enters a cave where it vanishes. The Mali naravni most is on the eastern end of the polje. This two natural bridges are obviously the last remains of a now destroyed cave. There are also several caves like Zelške jame. Public footpaths allow interesting walks through the park.

Zelške jame is part of the Rakov Škocjan Nature Reserve. The cave is accessible by public footpaths, and it is possible to visit the first part of the cave and walk from one polje to another as one of the footpaths crosses the caves in between. This cave is fun to discover and shows many rare and interesting karst features. The speleothems are little, mostly of moonmilk.

The cave is part of a huge cave system which already started to collapse. Several parts of the cave are valleys today, called Polje. Other, very short parts of the cave are called natural bridges. Some of the longer parts of the system connect the valleys and allow to follow the river to the next polje.

At the eastern end of the valleys, the true start of the Zelške jame cave system is closed by a iron gate. This part of the cave, a cave system of more than four kilometers length, may be visited on spelunking tours. The are two trips, one to the dry part of the cave, another to the river part done by boat. Professional caver equipment, including overall, helmet, headlight and boots are provided.

The accessibility of many sights depends on the water level, so it is a bad idea to visit this park after heavy rains or in spring.

Mind trick

Try this, its actually quite good. But don't cheat! Count the number of 'F's in the following text:

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE-
SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIF-
IC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

Managed it? Scroll down only after you have counted them!

OK? How many?

Three? Wrong, there are six - no joke! Read again!

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE-
SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIF-
IC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

The reasoning is further down.

The brain cannot process the word "OF".

Anyone who counts all six 'F's on the first go is a genius, Three is normal.

I have new video camera. I bought it because I like to record any event which I can. I also like record nature, animals and other stuff. I bought sony's camcorder with 30Gb hdd (hard disc drive) and 40x optical zoom (2000x digital).

On this picture is the same model of camera as my is. My last camera was also sony but it was digital 8 model. I sold it to my friend and co-worker David. I hope that he will make good films with it. We'll see. www.sony.si

My Logical model

Igor P wrote an article about his data base last week. I am also working on similar project but with different content. I am making data base about my job. I work as controler and at my job I usually repair different controllers. This database will describe conection between errors and material in warehouse.

On this picture I show logical model of my database. Here I have seven tables. They describe controllers, errors and situation of elements (material) in warehouse. I made this model with DB Designer. I also made Physical model with two applications. Oracle and Xampp. It seems that database works. Now it is time to write description about it.

Stumpy and his wife

Stumpy and his wife Martha went to the state fair every year. Every year Stumpy would say, "Martha, I'd like to ride in that there airplane."
And every year Martha would say, "I know Stumpy, but that airplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars."
One year Stumpy and Martha went to the fair and Stumpy said, "Martha, I'm 71 years old. If I don't ride that airplane this year I may never get another chance."
Martha replied, "Stumpy, that there airplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars."
The pilot overheard them and said, "Folks, I'll make you a deal, I'll take you both up for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say one word, I won't charge you, but if you say one word it's ten dollars."
Stumpy and Martha agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of twists and turns, rolls and dives, but not a word was heard. He did all his tricks over again, but still not a word. They landed and the pilot turned to Stumpy, "By golly, I did everything I could think of to get you to yell out, but you didn't."
Stumpy replied, "Well, I was gonna say something when Martha fell out, but ten dollars is ten dollars."

8th May

The end of the European phase of World War II is celebrated on May 8, 1945. Victory in Europe was commemorated with celebrations all around the world in recognition of the unconditional surrender of all German forces signed in Reims, France, the day before. British pšrime minister Winston Churchill told war-weary Londoners, This is your victory, while U.S. President Harry Truman reminded Americans that until Japan's defeat, Victory is but half-won. On August 14, Japan agreed to surrender to the Allies after a momentous eight days that saw two U.S. atomic bombs dropped on Japan and a declaration of war by the Soviets. On September 2, World War II officially ended with the signing of Japan's surrender on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

How to hide MP3 inside GIF

It's really cool! You can send special messages in recorded audio to your friend in picture format. It's like combining 2 files to become 1 . When you run the combined file, it will by default display the picture. To listen to the audio into the picture file, you'll need to manually load the combined file into Winamp.

1. Use the command "copy picture.gif /b + audio.mp3 /b combined.gif" in DOS prompt.

We have a new file "combined.gif" We run the "combined.gif" file and it display the same picture. We can run Winamp and manually load the combined.gif and we are able to play the audio.mp3 sound. Looks like Winamp can support this feature but not Windows Media Player. We can also combined mp3 and jpg. Combination between wav and gif doesn't work.

Cheers!

I'm back...

Hello.

This vacations was just great. I was traveled all over Slovenia. From Šempeter to Murska Sobota, Beltinci. Last Sunday I went with my friends to Rakov Škocjan. We walked all the way through it. Here are about 14 orientation or imporatnt places. But more about this I will write later. Today I was in Brezje and at Golnik. It was nice.

Unfortunately I must go to work tomorrow. But fortunately I will be here only two days. Then I will return to our weekend house. ...
